We mainstream school feeding programs across Africa

We design a blueprint, operate it, then support replication.

  • Sourcing
  • Storing
  • Cooking
  • Delivering

Sourcing

We know local ingredients are more palatable to kids and friendlier to the environment. They also compose a well-balanced diet. Our school meals have an average of 7.0 food categories, above the global average and well ahead of the 5.3 average for other African school feeding programs.

We’re dedicated to strengthening local supply chains. It’s part of FOOD AND EDUCATION FOR KIDS - Feeding the future . We source approximately 80% of our ingredients from the local region. And our fresh produce is 100% Kenyan grown. We purchase 42 tons of vegetables every week. We also source large volumes of beans and lentils from local farmers for 3–4 months at a time to secure the best prices.

Storing

Central storage creates efficiency and safety. Aggregators deliver ingredients to F4E’s 30,000 ft2 warehouse. There we use global best practices to prevent wastage and spoilage, including limiting moisture content, fumigation, and conducting lab analyses on dry goods.

As dry grains are delivered, we use a sorting machine to cut sorting time by 87% compared to manual sorting and increase accuracy to 99%. From this central warehouse, we use predictive analytics tools to estimate the volume of supplies needed in each kitchen. Our processes cut food wastage to nearly 0% versus an industry average of 5%.

Cooking

We’ve developed various centralized kitchen types to accommodate urban, peri-urban, and rural contexts. A kitchen model consists of physical design, construction, interior layouts, and safety standards. We create consistency to optimize efficiency and management.

We have high-tech, mechanized and cost-effective central kitchens. These kitchens are equipped with steam-powered cookers that reduce cook time by 60%. Including our Giga Kitchen in Nairobi (Africa’s largest kitchen!) that can feed 60,000 children a day. Our decentralized kitchens serve rural areas with more dispersed populations. In all our kitchens, meals are prepared according to stringent food safety standards.

Delivering

We nail on-time and safe delivery, daily. Our trucks and motorbikes verify meal quantities and deliver food to partner schools. Meals are served fresh during a fixed window between 12:20–1:30 pm. We’ve developed a meticulous logistics system that manages over 40 trucks to ensure lunches are delivered at least 65°C with no contamination and no delays.

Once at the schools, kids use their Tap2Eat wristbands to deduct a small amount from their virtual wallets and then fill up their lunch boxes. They enjoy a delicious and exuberant lunch hour, then return to class ready to focus and participate.

Lunch begins with Tap2Eat

We’re obsessed with data-informed operations. Because every efficiency win means a lower cost per meal for parents.

We use established tech in novel ways to have real-time visibility into every part of the blueprint – reducing kitchen waste to nearly 0% and creating transparency for the families we serve.

A cornerstone of our tech platform is our Tap2Eat system. Tech-enabled wristbands linked to digital wallets frictionlessly collect payments from parents. The system also verifies delivery to children and then sends data directly into our operations dashboards.

This ensures we always have real-time, accurate data to track quantity and uptake.
Feeding predictive analytics, and better future
meal planning.

In 2020, we fed 5,000 children from one central kitchen
in one county in Kenya. Five years later, we feed over 500,000 children from 29 large central kitchens and adapted
rural kitchen models in six counties. Or in other words,
we scaled.

National government policy and support is critical for school feeding programs. But local county governments make implementation decisions. Each county expansion in Kenya represents an example of copying and adapting our blueprint. Each county has its own challenges. Its own geographical realities. Its own unique considerations. And we've succeeded. We’ve achieved 100% penetration for early childhood development learners in two entire counties. And in 2023, the Governor of Nairobi partnered with F4E to deliver a county-wide school feeding program to all 250,000+ children in Nairobi’s public primary schools. Beyond this, we support others in mainstreaming school feeding across the continent. We convene, host learning visits, influence policy, and provide targeted technical assistance.

Learn About Our Partnerships

Africa's largest kitchen

In 2023, we opened the doors to our Giga Kitchen. Its 3,000-square-meter footprint holds the equipment for cooking up to 60,000 meals per day, including steam-powered cooking vessels, food prep areas, and hot and cold storage. Boardrooms and offices overlook the vast floor, providing space for strategy sessions and learning visits.

Kitchens and Schools by Location

We currently operate out of Kenya with plans to adopt our blueprint in two other African countries in the next 3-5 years. Toggle on the map below to see where our kitchens and schools currently reside. As of January 2025 F4E is in ten counties, with 168 centralized or decentralized kitchens, and we provide meals to over 500,000 children in 1,300+ schools.

Visiting Food4Education brings to light the sheer scale of their school feeding operations. Other stakeholders including governments could learn a lot from the Food4Education model.
